Dental Implants

Picture
Currently, there are three ways to replace a missing tooth or multiple teeth.  These include implants, bridges, or removable partial dentures.  Of these three, an implant is usually the best option when there is enough supporting structure (bone and tissue) present.  An implant restoration is made up of three parts: the implant, the abutment and the crown.
  1. Implant - the part that replaces the root.  Unlike the natural root, an implant does not have a ligament and attaches directly to the bone through a process called osseointegration. This process typically takes about 3-4 months.
  2. Abutment - following complete osseointegration, the implant is then ready to support an abutment and crown.  The abutment is the portion of the restoration that acts as the interface between the crown and the implant.
  3. Crown - this is part of the restoration that is visible and looks and functions like your natural tooth.  Most often these are made from an all ceramic material called zirconia.  These crowns provide a great combination of durability and esthetics.
